In anticipation of a PNC experiment with the Ba
ion
, we have used the
apparatus described in the previous abstract to make precise measurements
of the following quantities and processes: decay profiles and lifetimes
of the 5D
and 5D
metastable states, branching ratios to
these states from 6P
, shelving rates from 6S
and
5D
, and the rate of the
quadrupole transition at 2.05
m. Other observations include
systematic perturbations to lifetimes and rates due to nonresonant laser
light and stray background light. We also report on the progress of
studies of differential shelving rates from ground state magnetic
sublevels using circularly polarized shelving light on a spin-polarized
ion, and quadrupole shifts of these sublevels induced by the 2.05
m
laser beam, with the ultimate goal of measuring PNC interference effects.
