CMSN-related Job Opening
Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy
January 2, 2008
The U.S. Department of Energy is seeking qualified candidates to lead its Basic Energy Sciences
(BES) program within the Office of Science. With an annual budget of more than $1,200 million, the
BES program is one of the nation's largest sponsors of research in the natural sciences. It is
uniquely responsible for supporting fundamental research in materials sciences, chemistry,
geosciences, and aspects of biosciences impacting energy resources, production, conversion,
transmission, storage, efficiency, and waste mitigation. In FY 2007, the BES program funded research
in more than 170 academic institutions in 48 states and in 13 Department of Energy laboratories
located in 9 states. BES supports a large extramural research program, with approximately 40% of the
program's research activities sited at U.S. academic institutions. The BES program also supports
world-class scientific user facilities, providing outstanding capabilities for synthesizing and
characterizing materials of all kinds. The BES synchrotron radiation light sources, the neutron
scattering facilities, the electron beam characterization centers, and the nanoscale science
research centers represent the largest and best collection of such facilities supported by a single
organization in the world; these facilities host approximately 10,000 users annually.
The BES Director serves as one of the Associate Directors of the Office of Science. The incumbent is responsible for all strategic planning in the BES program; budget formulation and execution; management of the BES organization including a diverse federal workforce of approximately 60 technical and administrative staff; program integration with other Office of Science activities and with the Department of Energy's technology offices; and interagency and intergovernmental coordination. The position is within the ranks of the U.S. government's Senior Executive Service; members of the Senior Executive Service serve in key positions just below those of Presidential appointees.
We encourage you to learn more about the BES program, the Office of Science, and the Department of Energy by visiting the BES program website and links contained therein.
