A severe reduction in one or two dimensions of a condensed matter
system can cause profound changes in its properties. Very thin films and
their interfaces with bulk solids and liquids display unusual phases
and phase transitions, some resembling theoretical models of
two-dimensional matter and some having no analogues in
bulk materials.Our research areas of recent interest include:
