Physics 427A Assignments

Wednesday, February 20

  • I am sorry I have not kept this up to date for the last three weeks. You should have read and understood the notes I posted on the open website about nuclear energy, and read some of the supporting material I put on the ereserve site, and in the Physics-Astronomy Library reserve shelves.
  • Tomorrow, Thursday Feb. 21, I want everyone to tell me and the rest of the class how far they have got with the term paper, and what they hope to do.
  • Tomorrow I also hope to continue with the discussion of NMR which I started. Read my notes before Tuesday of next week, but they are only half done. I hope to get further readings on this up shortly.

Week January 28 to February 1

  • Do some reading on the applications of semiconductors from some of the material I have put on the library reserve shelves or on the âelectronic reserve, and be ready on Tuesday morning to have some useful discussion on a) What are the important physical properties of semiconductors? b) What are the different uses of semiconductors, and why different sorts of semiconductors are used?
  • Study Notes on Masers and Lasers, or the introductory parts of one or more of the books, by Thursday, January 31.
  • Week January 22 to January 25

  • Study Notes on Semiconductors, by Tuesday, January 22.
  • Read either Section 10-1 through 10-4 and 10-6 through 10-8 of P. A. Tipler and R. A. Llewellyn, Modern Physics , or some equivalent introduction to semiconductor physics and semiconductor devices,
  • or chapter 19 of M. P. Marder, Condensed Matter Physics. Make sure that you understand the words that are used, even if you do not follow the mathematics.
