Comments on Tycho

  • Each week the assignment will consist of both interactive examples and standard problems.

  • Solutions to Tycho problems will not be posted.

  • Significant Figures:  TYCHO checks that your answer is within 1% of the answer it calculates with your random numbers.  This means you often need to calculate your answer to three significant figures, even though the elements of the problem are only given to 1 or 2 significant figures.

  • Formula Acceptance:  One way to avoid the significant figures problem is to insert your answer as a formula (e.g., if given mass = 13 kg, force = 10 N, and asked for the acceleration in m/sec, you could enter "10/13" instead of 0.769)

  • Interactive Examples:  "HELP" is extensive.  It will guide you through a conceptual analysis of the problem. These must be done on-line.

  • Regular problems:  Here, the "HELP" is just hints of how to approach a problem (e.g., try superposition).  In these problems, the numbers are randomized by your student number.  You can get a "printer friendly" version of these problems to work on away from the computer.
