At this point in the year you have gained familiarity with Maxwell's equations and the techniques needed to solve them. The spring quarter is aimed at bringing your E&M knowledge to the edge of modern research. Therefore modern physics examples will be introduced when relevant.

The content is planned to include Jackson Chapts approximately 9.7-9.11,10.1-10.6,10.9-10.11,12.1-12.4,12.7,12.10,12.11,13.4-13.6,14.1-14.8. This is some really great material. First week: 9.7-9.11, second week 10.1-10.5, third week 10.8,11.1-11.5. Fourth-week 11.6,11.7,11.9-11.11,12.2,12.3; Fifth week 12.1,12.7,12.10,12.11, Sixth week 12.11,14.1-14.4. Seventh week 14.4,14.5, Eighth/ninth week 14.5,14.6,14.8, then 16.1.16.2, 13.1-13.4

Homework will be assigned every week or so, generally due on Fridays. Doing the assigned problems is probably the most important ingredient in learning the material, and your scores on these represent one-third of the grade. You may, and should discuss the hw problems with fellow students, but the solutions must be your own. It is important to hand in the homework on time in class on the due date. This is because solutions will be posted soon after class. Each individual homework problem is worth 10 points. The HW scores represent one-third of the grade. There will be two midterms, each representing one third of the grade. There will be no final exam for 515. Exams will be open book and open lecture notes. No downloads of solutions to E&M problems are allowed. No electronic devices allowed.

Midterm I Exam Friday, May 2, 11:00-12:20.
