Abstract:

In anticipation of a PNC experiment with the Batex2html_wrap_inline41 iongif, we have used the apparatus described in the previous abstract to make precise measurements of the following quantities and processes: decay profiles and lifetimes of the 5Dtex2html_wrap_inline45 and 5Dtex2html_wrap_inline47 metastable states, branching ratios to these states from 6Ptex2html_wrap_inline45, shelving rates from 6Stex2html_wrap_inline51 and 5Dtex2html_wrap_inline45, and the rate of the tex2html_wrap_inline55 quadrupole transition at 2.05 tex2html_wrap_inline57m. Other observations include systematic perturbations to lifetimes and rates due to nonresonant laser light and stray background light. We also report on the progress of studies of differential shelving rates from ground state magnetic sublevels using circularly polarized shelving light on a spin-polarized ion, and quadrupole shifts of these sublevels induced by the 2.05 tex2html_wrap_inline57m laser beam, with the ultimate goal of measuring PNC interference effects.
