Workshop overview

The September 2002 meeting in Seattle caps the 3rd year of our CMSN Project and a good show of progress will likely be important to its continuation. At least one DOE representative will likely be at the meeting. Given our experience with the two previous Workshops, it seems desirable to follow a meeting format similar to that in 2001.

New this year will be an improved approach for producing a WWW meeting report for communicating our results to the DOE. Thus we will be asking each participant to prepare in advance a two-page write-up accompanied by a one page figure or graphic in a standard .html format according to a standard.html that will be posted on our workshop WWW site:http://www.phys.washington.edu/~cmsn/sample.html and described below. In the past some contributions required substantial editing, which slowed down compilation and distribution of our WWW proceedings.

At the meeting we will also need the following:

**Team Leaders: We need from the Leaders of each of our three Teams (Rehr, Louie, and Chelikowsky and/or their respective co-leaders, Shirley, Benedict, and Pantelides) a short list of the major goals and progress for each Team, how they relate to the overall goals of the project. It's important to emphasize the coherence of our effort, despite the large number of different projects.

**Team Members (including leaders):

We need from each member the following items in a standard.html format,

a) A short title, author list, and address
b) A short statement of an objective. A brief description of each project is given here, which should be reviewed and updated.
c) An extended abstract NOT TO EXCEED 2 pages of your project which includes the following items:

Directions

Driving directions from SeaTac Airport to the University of Washington and University Inn

As you exit the airport, follow the signs marked "To Freeways". You want the road that goes to I-5 North (518) which you will get by keeping to the right as you exit the airport. After exiting onto WA-518, keep left in preparation for the exit to I-5 North. The signs are big and well-placed, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding I-5 North.

Take I-5 North towards Seattle. It will take about 15-20 minutes to get to downtown Seattle (expect heavy traffic between 3:30pm and 6pm!). Follow I-5 through downtown. Get in the right lane after passing downtown and watch for the 45th Street/Univ. of Washington exit (Exit #169). Exit to the right on 45th Eastbound.

Now you have a choice:

  • 1) If your destination is the University Inn: Go about 2 blocks east on 45th and make a right turn onto Roosevelt Ave. The University Inn is about 3 blocks down on the left, on the corner of Roosevelt and NE 42nd St.
  • 2) If your destination is the University of Washington: Go about 8 blocks to 15th Ave NE. Turn right (south) and drive 3 big blocks down to the big brick (underground) parking garage at about 41st St. Turn left into the garage. The attendant will give you a one day visitor parking permit for about $5 and a map of the campus if you ask for one. Physics is the huge structure at the corner of 15th Ave NE and NE Pacific, which is just a couple of big blocks further south along 15th. It's a fairly new brick building with a copper top.
