Workshop overview

The 2001 Computational Materials Science Network (CMSN) workshop on "Excited State Properties and Response Functions for Materials" will take place at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) on October the 18-19th, 2001. Although there will be no registration fee for this workshop all participants will be required to register Registration.

It is expected that all the members of the CMSN team on Excited-State Electronic Structure and Response Functions will attend this workshop to present their most recent results. There will also be a few talks by speakers outside the CMSN network whose research is relevant to the CMSN project.

Due to space limitations the total number of participants will be limited and preference will be given to CMSN team members. If you are not a CMSN member you should wait until your registration is confirmed before booking accommodation.

As for previous workshops partial support for travel and accommodation is available for CMSN participants (investigators and postdocs), up to an amount comparable to last year's maximum. Questions regarding travel support should be directed to John Rehr email jjr@leonardo.phys.washington.edu at the University of Washington. Please request a TEV form and save your receipts above $50.

The dates of this workshop have been chosen to immediately follow the ALS (Advanced Light Source at LBNL) users' group meeting and the ALS/SRRTNet (Synchrotron Radiation Research Theory Network) Workshop being held concurrently at LBNL 15-17th Oct.

This meeting is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's Computational Materials Science Network (CMSN). The mission of the Computational Materials Sciences Network is to advance frontiers in computational materials science by assembling diverse sets of researchers committed to working together to solve relevant materials problems that require cooperation across organizational and disciplinary boundaries.

Susan Green (LBNL-NERSC), SLGreen@lbl.gov, tel: (510) 486 5429, is providing administrative support for registration, accommodation and travel issues.

Venue

The workshop will take place at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL or "Berkeley Lab") in Perseverance Hall, Bld. 54 (part of the cafeteria). click here for a site map. LBNL can be reached from nearby Berkeley hotels by a regular Berkeley Lab shuttle bus service. Berkeley is reached from San Francisco International Airport or Oakland International Airport (and even San Jose International Airport). For more details on reaching the lab from the local airports, shuttle bus services, maps etc, click on Directions to the Lab.

IMPORTANT: Whether you take the bus, taxi or a car, bring along some evidence that you are attending the CMSN workshop such as the last email sent out. (Since Sep. 11, LBNL has more entry controls than before.) The guards at the gate will be told the names of our speakers and registered participants before you arrive. Others can enter, but may be asked more questions.

To get to the meeting place by free LBNL shuttle bus from the Durant Hotel: walk one block North along Bowditch Street (toward the Berkeley campus) and look for the LBNL bus stop (marked with a "Berkeley Lab" sign) on the campus side of Bancroft Avenue. Every 10 minutes a Berkeley Lab bus (white with blue and green stripes) should pass, heading downhill. Ride it all the way through downtown Berkeley and up the hill into LBNL, until it starts to turn back downhill at the "Transfer Station" (everyone gets off there; see the bus route from Bowditch to Station 1). At the Transfer Station, either walk uphill to the cafeteria (ask for directions) or switch to the on-site shuttle (ask the driver to let you off at the cafeteria; see the bus route from the "Transfer Station" to "Stop 7"). The cafeteria is the low building downhill from the bus stop. Perseverance Hall is to the left past its food service area. Allow at least 30 minutes from hotel to cafeteria.

If you take your car (not recommended), go to the top of Hearst Avenue/Cyclotron Road (which follows the North side of the Berkeley campus). At the LBNL gate, expect a search of your car. Ask for directions to the cafeteria parking lot. Use a parking space reserved for the workshop. Don't park in spaces that are marked "Blue Triangle" or are limited in time. The cafeteria is the low building downhill to the left from the parking lot. Perseverance Hall is to the left past its food service area.

To return to the Durant Hotel by bus after 4pm: walk to the Transfer Station and board an "Off-site" bus. It will NOT go close to the Durant Hotel; instead it will stay on the North side of campus. Get off at the Leroy stop or the Euclid stop and then walk across campus southward to the Durant Hotel or the Telegraph Avenue area. There are many restaurants on and around Euclid and Telegraph Avenues, as well as downtown around Shattuck Avenue (for these stay with the bus until Hearst/Shattuck).

Accommodation

A number of rooms have been blocked at the Durant Hotel in Berkeley jointly with the ALS users' group meeting. When booking these rooms participants should mention the ALS users' group meeting. Confirmed participants at the CMSN workshop must contact the hotels directly themselves and ask for the LBNL rate. A list of hotels (with contact information) close to LBNL (including the Durant) is given on the ALS web pages. click here

Parking at LBNL is difficult so participants are encouraged to stay at either the Durant or the Bancroft hotel which are very close to the LBNL shuttle bus route. If necessary parking can be arranged through NERSC.
