SUGGESTIONS, COMPLAINTS, GRIEVANCES

Suggestions from students for improvements in physics and courses or in degree requirements are always welcome. It is appropriate, of course, to make such suggestions directly to instructors in classes. But it also is especially helpful for suggestions to be made to the Physics Undergraduate Adviser Margot Nims (margot@phys.washington.edu / 206-543-2772 / C139A, PAT) or to Professor Robert Van Dyck (vandyck@phys.washington.edu / 206-543-2393 / B445, PAB), since in that way a suggestion is more certain to reach those with appropriate responsibility.

It also is important for students to report difficulties they encounter in scheduling, registration, and similar areas. It is only through such reports that some problems which can be solved come to light.

If a student has a complaint about the way in which a class is taught or a grievance concerning treatment in a class, it is important that it be heard. In all such cases the student should make an effort to discuss the matter directly with the instructor of the class. If the class is a physics course, and direct discussion with the instructor is unsatisfactory to the student, then the matter should be discussed with Professor Van Dyck (vandyck@phys.washington.edu / 206-543-2393 / B445, PAB). If the class is in another department, and direct discussion with the instructor has not been satisfactory, the matter should be discussed with an appropriate person in that department's office.

Beyond this, any student always has the right to make a complaint known to administrative officers at any level in the University and should not hesitate to do so if it is felt that earlier efforts have not resolved a problem. If desired, a complaint or grievance may be directed through the office of the University Ombudsman.
