UNUSUAL GRADES FOR PHYSICS MAJORS (SUCH AS CR/NC AND S/NS) Students who have have earned 45 college credits are permitted up to 25 credits on a satisfactory/not satisfactory basis. Such credits may be applied only to electives, not to courses taken to fulfill any specific university, college, or departmental graduation requirement. The University policy on S/NS grades stated above permits a student to elect this basis for grading courses which are beyond the minimum required for the B.S. Degree. Students planning to enter graduate or professional schools after receiving the B.S. Degree are warned, however, that the presence of such grades in their record of study in advanced physics courses or in related subjects is apt to be interpreted unfavorably. The same warning applies to most employers of students who earn only a bachelor's degree. Students should be aware that the presence of many course withdrawals and incomplete grades in their records may work to their disadvantage. This is especially true with prospective employers who frequently interpret such records as suggesting poor motivation and low reliability. Courses graded on the credit/no credit (CR/NC) basis are offered only on this basis and at the discretion of the academic department sponsoring the course. All students registered in such a course are graded on this same basis. CR grades are acceptable in fulfillment of all degree requirements. They should not be confused with S/NS grades. A grade record or transcript may list an X in place of a grade. This indicates that no grade was reported by the instructor. Courses with X "grades" are not complete and cannot be used to fulfill requirements. If your transcript has such entries, you should make every effort to have the grades reported.
