What if I’m already using Deskmail or Gmail to read email?

It would be great if you could email us and say “I’m forwarding email to username@u.washington.edu or username@gmail.com.” If you don’t we’ll be able to discover this on our own.

What is the timeline for the migration?

Users have between now and September 24 to stop forwarding of the UW email to phys.washington.edu and copy their inbox on mail.phys.washington.edu to deskmail.washington.edu.

The SMTP service will stop delivering physics email to mail.phys.washington.edu and start delivering physics email to u.washington.edu on September 24.

On December 29th, the IMAP service running on mail.phys.washington.edu will be shutdown and your old email folders will no longer be available.

What if I’m out of town and I’m a faculty member?

For this one-time special event, PACS is willing to do a conference call for assistance. Please email help@phys.washington.edu to schedule a consultation time.

Have you guys done this before?

Yes! The entire Astronomy department made this migration last winter break and it went quite well. Also, Blayne Heckel, Larry Yaffe, Bob VanDyke, and Ivy Mason have already made this migration as part of our BETA test and seem happy with the transition.

Why are we migrating email accounts to UW Technology’s Deskmail?

-        Better support facilities

-        Improved spam filtering

-        We all pay for that service already, so why have two email systems?

-        Reduction in replicated services with central IT

Because of economies of scale, UW Technology can provide 24/7 system support and monitoring of the email system here at the UW. They also spend thousands of dollar on advanced spam filtering technologies. Also remember that they take a cut of your indirects, so we're double-paying right now by managing two separate mail server. Finally, it's hard for the department to argue for more money from other sources if we're replicating services with these basic but critical, central administrative computer services.

If you have any concerns don't hesitate to email help@phys.washington.edu or myself directly.

Thanks again,

R.C. and the PACS Team
